Race is on to find the UK's top engineering innovators

Four top UK engineering teams have been selected as finalists for Britain's biggest engineering prize. The four finalists for the 2008 Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award include: a catalytic converter set to clean up diesel car emissions; arobotic retrieval system for the UK Biobank working at -80°C; a sensor on a chip that can detect a whiff of explosives or a hint of disease, and the world's first bionic hand. HRH the Duke of Edinburgh will present a £50,000 prize and the solid gold MacRobert award medal to the winner at the Academy Awards Dinner in London on Monday 9 June...

The Academy with its London Engineering Project and the Construction Knowledge Exchange held an employment fair for London-based construction and engineering firms at the Academy's premises on Carlton House Terrace in April. The aim of the event was to create a unique opportunity for invited Londoners who seek engineering and construction careers in London to meet carefully selected London employers in an exclusive environment.

Fire expert aims to make buildings better by design

Buildings could be better designed against the dangers of fire thanks to research at the University of Edinburgh. Structural engineer and fire expert Dr Luke Bisby has been appointed Arup Foundation/Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellow in Structures and Fire, and will join the University's Building Research Establishment (BRE) Centre for Fire Safety Engineering.

Dramatic Changes in the Nature of the World's Oceans and Atmospheres

The Academy hosted a Lloyd's Register Educational Trust Lecture by Dr Richard Spinrad, a senior official in the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) last night. He spoke about the Risk-Informed Investments in Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, on the work being done to reduce the risks posed by natural disasters such as hurricanes and tsunamis as well as by the potential impact of global warming. He said "Over the last ten years, the world has suffered an increasing number of natural disasters affecting more than 2.5 billion people, killing 478,100 people, and causing economic losses of about US$690 billion..."

Surrey Space Centre wins Academy funding for Chinese exchange

UK-based space engineer Dr Yang Gao of the Surrey Space Centre is to develop a new generation of lunar rovers with one of China's top engineers, funded by The Royal Academy of Engineering. The project will pave the way for future moon shots such as the UK's proposed Moonraker lander mission and the second phase of China's Chang'e programme.

Academy Fellow shortlisted for prestigious Millennium Technology Prize

Professor David Payne FREng has been shortlisted for his work in developing technology which made possible the creation of a high-speed global fibre-optic network. He is Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton University and has been shortlisted for the Millennium Technology Prize along with co-inventors Professor Emmanuel Desurvire and Dr Randy Giles. The trio were awarded "For their outstanding contributions to telecommunications through the invention of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier which made possible the global high-capacity optical fibre network, serving as a backbone of the global information highway."
