As Britain’s national academy for engineering, we bring together the country’s most eminent engineers from all disciplines to promote excellence in the science, art and practice of engineering. Our strategic priorities are to enhance the UK’s engineering capabilities, to celebrate excellence and inspire the next generation, and to lead debate by guiding informed thinking and influencing public policy.

Parliamentary meeting focuses on engineering and the UK economy

The UK's future prosperity will depend on the creation of a more diverse economic base, which requires a re-balancing of the economy in favour of hi-tech, high value productive industries. That was the topic of a meeting of the Associate Parliamentary Engineering Group which brought together engineers and Parliamentarians to debate the way forward.

Focus on innovation in healthcare
22 January 2010
On 19 January the Academy hosted a briefing seminar on the integration of technologies into the clinical environment. Globally, healthcare is becoming increasingly dependent on engineering technology. The UK has plenty of expertise in the research and development of such technology, but historically we have been less adept at exploiting and integrating these developments into the clinical environment for the benefit of patients and the UK economy. In recent years, it has become recognised that both benefits need to be realised and organisations now exist to encourage those processes. Healthcare technology is complex and expensive - it is important that correct decisions are made regarding its implementation...

Engineering a low-carbon built environment
19 January 2010 Front cover of the Engineering a low-carbon built environment report
The UK will not be able to achieve its target of reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 unless it urgently addresses carbon emissions from the built environment, according to a report published today by the Academy. Buildings currently account for 45 per cent of our carbon emissions but it is estimated that 80 per cent of the buildings we will be occupying in 2050 have already been built...

Haiti Appeal
15 January 2010
With tens of thousands feared dead and over 3 million left injured, homeless and traumatised, aid agencies are mobilising to meet the most immediate needs of those affected. Top priorities for agencies delivering aid are water and sanitation, food, shelter, and medical supplies. RedR needs your help. At this moment, RedR has Members on standby for potential deployment into the affected areas and we have so far received a request for WATSAN engineers. In addition we have responded to requests for specialist advice from our Technical Support Service. Several RedR Members are also already on their way to Haiti as part of Agency responses.

Seeing the commercial potential of medical imaging

Engineering science is not just aimed at writing a paper for a journal - it has as its goal the aim of being applied in real life and is therefore distinct from science, Professor Sir Michael Brady told The Royal Academy of Engineering this week. Giving the Academy's New Year Lecture on Monday 11 January, Sir Michael used his own field of medical imaging to illustrate the importance of commercialisation in enabling and driving progress in engineering science.

Targeting 30,000 hard-to-reach engineers of tomorrow
07 January 2010
The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust, jointly launch Tomorrow's Engineers, a new enhancement and enrichment partnership to improve levels of science and engineering engagement in hard to reach schools across the UK. The scheme, which will be announced to teachers at the Association for Science Education Conference in Nottingham, will initially support hands-on engineering activities to 30,000 children and young people aged five to nineteen in 2010...
