Professor John Mallard OBE FREng has been
awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal College of
Radiologists for his outstanding contributions to
radiological imaging, and the 2004 Medal of the
European Federation of Organisations of Medical
Physics (EFOMP) for his outstanding and
internationally recognised contributions to medical
imaging. He has also been awarded the Freedom of the
City of Aberdeen by the Lord Provost.
Professor K J Miller FREng was awarded an
Honorary Fellowship at the University of Central
Lancashire on 14 July for his work in Mountaineering
Science. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate
in Engineering by the University of Sheffield on 19
July.
Professor Philip Nelson FREng has been
appointed Deputy Vice- Chancellor of the University
of Southampton. He is currently Director of the
university's Institute of Sound and Vibration
Research, and will begin his five-year term as
Deputy Vice- Chancellor on 1 September 2005.
Professor John O'Reilly FREng has been
reappointed as Chief Executive and Deputy Chair of
the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC).
Mr Richard Parry-Jones CBE FREng has been
granted an Honorary Fellowship by his 'home'
University of Wales. Mr Parry-Jones is Head of
Product Development at Ford Motor Company.
Professor Andrew Blake FREng has recently
been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Professor Tony Hey FREng has been appointed
Corporate Vice President at Microsoft Corporation to
coordinate the Technical Computing Initiative (TCI)
and will work across the company to coordinate
Microsoft's efforts to collaborate with the
scientific community worldwide. He will join the
company on 27 June 2005.
Professor Christopher Snowden FREng has
recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Professor Sir John Meurig Thomas HonFREng is
to receive the Sir George Stokes Gold Medal of the
Analytical Division of the Royal Society of
Chemistry for pioneering and innovative electron
based nanochemical analyses. He is also to be
awarded honorary doctorates from the University of
Sydney, Australia and Clarkson University, New York
for his contributions to solid-state and surface
chemistry and to heterogeneous catalysis.
Professor Richard Williams FREng will be
appointed Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of
Leeds from 1 August 2005, with a brief of
entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer.
Lord Wolfson of Marylebone HonFREng has
recently been elected an Honorary Fellow of the
Royal Society.
Professor Roger Falconer FREng of Cardiff
University has been appointed a Guest Professor in
the Department of Mechanics at Tianjin University,
China's oldest university.
Sir Peter Gershon CBE FREng is to succeed Sir
Malcolm Bates as non-executive Chairman of Premier
Farnell plc with effect from 1 March 2005. Sir Peter
is a member of Council at the Academy and a
non-executive Director of HM Treasury.
Professor Norman Jones FREng has been elected
as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of
Engineering from 1 January 2005. Professor Jones is
AA Griffith Professor of Mechanical Engineering and
Director of Impact Research Centre at the University
of Liverpool.
Professor John D Rhodes CBE FREng has been
elected a Foreign Associate of the United States
National Academy of Engineering (NAE), for research,
entrepreneurship, and commercial applications in
circuit and microwave theory. Professor Rhodes is
Executive Chairman of Filtronic plc.
Mr Peter Saraga OBE FREng Vice President of
The Royal Academy of Engineering, has recently been
nominated to serve as President-elect of the Council
of the Institute of Physics. If elected at the
Annual General Meeting on 21 July 2005, he will
serve as President-elect from 1 October for one
year, then President for two years and immediate
Past President for one year.
Professor Ray Smallman FREng has been elected
a Foreign Associate of the United States National
Academy of Engineering (NAE), for fundamental
studies of defects in solids produced by irradiation
damage and plastic deformation. He will attend an
induction ceremony in Washington DC in October.
Professor Smallman is Emeritus Professor of
Metallurgy and Materials at the University of
Birmingham.
Professor Steve Young, FREng has been awarded
a 2004 Technical Achievement Award by the IEEE
Signal Processing Society. The citation reads: "For
his outstanding contributions to the advancement of
the theory and performance of speech technology,
including speech recognition, spoken language
understanding, and dialog systems."
Professor P. Ole Fanger FREng of the
Technical University of Denmark, has recently
received the following awards: honarary Doctor at
Hokkaido University, Japan; Honaray Professor at
Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; Honaray Doctor
at Catholic University leuven, Belgium; Honorary
Doctor at the Technical University of Sofia,
Bulgaria.
Professor John F.Knott FREng has been chosen
as the 2005 Institute of Metals Lecturer and
Recipient of the Robert Franklin Mehl Award for
leadership in the field of materials science and
applications. He will be presented with his award at
the TMS Annual Exhibition in San Fransisco on 15
february 2005.
Professor David Vernon Morgan FREng of the
Cardiff University School of Engineering has
recently been awarded the Papal Cross for his
services to higher education. Professor Morgan
received the award from the Archbishop of Cardiff,
the Most Reverend peter Smith, on behalf of Pope
John Paul II.
Professor James Gimzewski FREng has recently
collaborated with media artist Victoria Vesna on an
art installation entitled ‘Nano Manadala’. Focusing
on the molecular structure of a single grain of
sand, the exhibition in New York celebrated the
coming together of art, science and technology.
Mr Steve Vranch FREng has been recently appointed Chair of the Nuclear
Safety Advisory Committee (NuSAC) by the Health and Safety Commission.
He will be succeeding Professor John Head CBE, who retired at the end of 2003.
Ms Faith Wainwright FREng was recently appointed to the British
Library's Advisory Council. The Council mostly consists of people with a publishing, library or academic background and is a significant appointment for involving engineering in the broader areas of influence.
Professor Y.H. Song FREng has recently been appointed to Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Studies) at Brunel University, commencing 1 August 2004. At Brunel, Professor Song is also Director of Brunel Advanced Institute of Network Systems, which is internationally acknowledged for its research into analysis, operation and control of network systems, including electricity networks.
Professor Phil Coates FREng has been appointed to the post of Pro Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation & Knowledge Transfer at the University of Bradford, from 1 August 2004. Professor Coates leads a world-class polymer engineering research laboratory at Bradford University, is a Director of the Polymer Interdisciplinary Research Centre and Director of the Yorkshire Forward Polymer Centre of Industrial Collaboration.
Dr Julia King CBE FREng was appointed Imperial College
London's new Principal of the Faculty of Engineering on 30 June, taking over from Acting Principal Professor Frank Leppin. She joins Imperial from the Institute of Physics, where she has been Chief Executive since September 2002. She is expected to join Imperial later this year.
Professor Christopher M Snowden, FREng, CEng, FIEE, FIEEE was appointed the University of Surreys Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive on 6 July, with effect from 1 July 2005. Professor Snowden will succeed Professor Patrick J Dowling, CBE, DL, FREng, FRS, who retires from office on 30 June 2005. He was recently awarded the 2004 Royal Academy of
Engineering's Silver Medal for his outstanding contributions to the UK microwave semiconductor industry.
Professor Emeritus Ray Smallman, CBE, DSc, FRS, FREng has been awarded the 2004 Acta Materialia Gold Medal and Prize. This is the Premier International Medal for Scientific contributions, achievement and leadership in the field of Material Science.
Gordon Campbell FREng was recently appointed as Chairman of BNFL. He will
succeed Hugh Collum who steps down from the post after nearly five
years. The appointment will take effect on 1 June 2004.
Professor Peter Gregson FREng has recently been appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast, succeeding Sir George Bain. His impressive profile includes research in the fields of aerospace materials and innovative approaches to the replacement of hip and other joints, which has attracted international interest.
Professor John McCanny CBE FREng FRS
Professor of Microelectronics Engineering at Queen's University Belfast and founder of the Amphion Semi-conductor, was recently awarded the IT Professional of the Year Award for 2004 by the British Computer Society.
Emeritus Professor Keith J Miller FREng has recently been conferred the Fellowship of Imperial College
