Executive Engineers Programme
There is a paramount
requirement to ensure that top engineering
graduates continue to develop as
professional engineers in order to provide
UK industry with the high calibre technical
and commercial managers required by world
class enterprises. This has led the Academy,
with the support of the Gatsby Charitable
Foundation, to initiate an enhanced career
programme for innovative top engineering
graduates. This programme will not only lead
participants to attainment of chartered
engineer status (CEng), but also lay a firm
foundation for their higher business
education and professional development. It
is designed to provide continuation training
for outstandingly able engineering graduates
with leadership potential, such as those who
have already benefited from the Engineering
Leadership Advanced Awards programme, and similar
company schemes, who aspire to reach senior
management and executive positions.
Scheme partners
The programme will be
run in partnership with companies and
enterprises that employ top engineering
graduates and offer exciting career
development with early managerial
responsibility. The graduates will benefit
from the stimulation, rapid progression,
enhanced in-depth training and vision
imparted by this programme.
Programme administration
The training programme will be
compatible with current practice, but allow
for acceleration and curriculum enhancement.
Students will participate in their company
training programme which should include
project management, communication through
writing and presentation, a structured
thinking course, negotiation and selling.
These programmes will follow the
requirements of SARTOR and the Initial
Professional Development (IPD) curriculum of
their respective engineering institutions.
The Enhanced Training Programme will allow
for the provision of additional training in
entrepreneurship, innovation, business
strategy and bespoke professional personal
development.
Career development
It is considered that
the IPD of top engineering graduates should
ideally follow a four-stage programme which
will be mirrored in the training programmes
of the participating companies.
Stage 1 – Initial training
Before it is possible
to move into any form of engineering
management it is important for a new
graduate to undertake a period of and
development as an engineer. This first stage
is essential for building credibility with
peers and should last for a minimum of
twelve months. It will start with a period
of induction into the company and be
followed with hands-on project work. This
will provide all the necessary training to
instill a firm foundation in the principles
of project management. It is also possible
that during this period the candidate will
receive technical training in specific
areas.
Stage 2 – Sub-project manager
After the initial
training, scheme students will be ready to
act as sub-project managers. This will
include responsibility for estimating,
planning and budget control. This should
last for six months to one year. In civil
engineering this may be a major study by the
students into their chosen specialist area
and will culminate in a report which will be
a substantial contribution to their
accredited professional experience and early
award of CEng.
Stage 3 –Project manager
By this stage students
should be ready to take on management of a
project. This will include responsibilities
concerned with the sale, planning the work,
writing the proposal, preparing the contract
and participating in negotiations with the
client. When the project starts, the
responsibilities of the project manager will
include managing the team to complete the
work to time and budget and managing the
quality of the deliverables. A sizeable
project will typically last a year.
Stage 4- Broadening horizons
Having achieved a
sound foundation for an engineering career,
the next step will be to broaden the
students’ horizons based on the enhanced
general training.
The enhanced training programme
It is proposed that
there will also be a programme of wider
education and training encompassing project
management, innovation, finance, marketing
and business strategy which will broaden the
students and prepare them to continue on
fast track executive development. This is
achieved by bringing together this selected
cadre for interactive workshops at each
stage of their career development. The value
added by these training modules is a crucial
element in the programme. The first module
will be focused on Change in Organisations,
prior to stage 2. The second will be on
Effective Leadership and Management prior to
stage 3 and the final one on Business
Planning and Strategy. The workshops will
take the form of weekend courses at which
lectures, group exercises and seminar work
will consolidate the students’ earlier
training, introduce them to the latest
techniques and practices and provide a sound
framework in which to update their career
plan and develop the next phase of their
training.
