Panasonic Trust Fellowships

On 2 October 1997, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd and Panasonic UK Ltd celebrated the 25th anniversary of the UK Company by generously donating a further £500,000 to the Panasonic Trust to broaden its activities in the professional development of UK engineers. The Trustees used this donation to launch the Panasonic Trust Fellowships.

The objective of the Fellowships is to provide financial support to selected graduate engineers wishing to undertake full-time Masters’ courses in subjects related to the Environment and Sustainability. Each Fellowship has a financial value of £8,000.

This scheme complements the Panasonic Trust Awards, which support industrially employed engineers to undertake part-time modular Masters’ courses.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the award of a Panasonic Trust Fellowship an individual must:

  • be a UK citizen;

  • be qualified to degree level in engineering or a related discipline;

  • have membership at any grade of a professional engineering institution;

  • have some industrial experience, which may be from a sandwich course work placement, or through a ‘year out’ before commencing university.

Which courses are suitable?

Awards are presently tenable for study on the following full-time Masters’ courses:

  • Engineering for Sustainable Development at University of Cambridge

  • Manufacturing Masters’ Courses at Cranfield University

  • Water Pollution Control Technology/Water & Wastewater Engineering at Cranfield University

  • Integrated Waste Management at Cranfield University

  • Environmental Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh

  • Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh

  • Geotechnical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University

  • Civil & Environmental Engineering Masters' Courses at Imperial College London

  • Environmental Technology at Imperial College London

  • Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University

  • Corrosion Control Engineering at the University of Manchester

  • Environmental Engineering at the University of Manchester

  • Renewable Energy: Technology and Sustainability at the University of Reading

  • Environmental & Energy Engineering at the University of Sheffield

  • Environmental Management Programme Masters’ Courses at the University of Southampton

  • Energy Systems and the Environment at the University of Strathclyde

  • Water and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey

  • Environmental Systems Engineering at University College London

  • Urban Design/Town and Country Planning at the UWE Bristol

  • Manufacturing Masters Courses at the University of Warwick

Nature of the Fellowship

Each Fellowship has a financial value of £8,000. In addition, awardees will be eligible for financial support from other Royal Academy of Engineering schemes such as the International Travel Grants.

Awardees that successfully complete their studies will be eligible for the award of the Panasonic Trust’s Silver Medal, whilst those graduating with distinction being eligible for the award of the Gold Medal.

Application procedure for 2008

The application consisting of a completed application form, two passport sized photographs and an up-to-date CV must be submitted no later than 1 August 2008.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be notified by 8 August, with final interviews taking place at the Academy’s offices on 21 and 22 August. The outcome of the interviews will be made available to candidates from 25 August.

Selection Committee

The award of a Fellowship is entirely at the discretion of the Selection Committee and any decision of the Committee is final on all matters.
