Schemes for Professional Engineers

Engineering Professional Development Awards

In today’s business world the most important resource a company has is the knowledge and skills held by its employees. For a company to compete in the global market place of the 21st century, it must strive to become a world-class performer. One way of creating competitive advantage is to ensure that the knowledge and skills flowing into it from its employees reflect the very latest in technological advances and business practice. This scheme aims to assist companies with this task by providing funds to support training programmes dealing with the development of their engineering staff.

Nature of the scheme

Awards of up to £15,000 will be made to selected company training programmes for the financial year 2008/2009.

In addition, prizes of £1,000 are being offered for each of the five most innovative applications.

Nature of a training programme

A company's proposed programme must relate in a clear way to its business plan or current strategic objectives. The needs of individuals in the programme should be established by formal review. There is a requirement for the training in each programme to have a technical or scientific content. Programmes may comprise any relevant training activity or combinations of activities. Examples of such activities include:

  • Work-based learning over the Internet and e-courses.

  • In-house training activities, seminars, short courses and bespoke courses.

  • Training required by the implementation of new legislation or standards.

  • Attendance at conferences, seminars and trade fairs.

  • Short-term secondments to subsidiaries or to other organisations in the UK for defined purposes.

  • Part-time and distance-learning courses and packages.

Any training activity will be given due consideration. Advice on the suitability of activities is available from The Royal Academy of Engineering.

Companies are encouraged to think laterally in composing their training programmes in order to stimulate and focus the creativity, capability and business orientation of their engineers in effective and exciting ways.

Which companies are eligible to apply?

  • All UK companies operating in the engineering, manufacturing, information technology or construction and building services sectors.

  • Any size of company is able to participate. Applications from small and medium sized enterprises, small business units of large companies and Business Park Developments are particularly welcome.

What are the eligibility criteria for programme participants?

  • Qualified ideally with a degree or HND/HNC in engineering or a closely allied subject. OND/ONC or NVQ Level III qualifications are acceptable provided the individual has substantial industrial experience.

  • Have at least two years industrial experience.

How to apply

The application, consisting of the training programme, company form and a participant form for each individual involved must be submitted before 24 October 2008. Application packs are available from Ian Bowbrick

Companies will be notified as to the outcome of their application by mid December 2008.

Training programme content and presentation

The Training Programme should be presented unbound in report form on single sided A4 paper. It must include details about the training activities to be undertaken with justification and post-training objectives for each participant. Information on the company and its policy towards the training of its employees will greatly assist the Selectors. Where the programme involves a course, the provider must be identified and the start date and duration made clear. Details on the course content should also be appended.

If a secondment is to be undertaken, the work programme must be outlined and supported by a letter from a contact at the host company. The contact should preferably be the project supervisor.

Each training programme must include a breakdown of the total costs involved. A figure for the amount the company will be committing to the programme must be indicated in the breakdown. This may include contributions towards fees, books, stationery and IT equipment, travelling expenses and salaries paid during any of the activities.
