Schemes for Professional Engineers
Sainsbury Management Fellowships in the Life Sciences
The Sainsbury
Management Fellowship Scheme in the Life
Sciences, which is funded by the Gatsby
Charitable Foundation, supports
scientists of high career potential to
undertake activities related to their
Personal Development Plans.
Objectives
The overall objective
of the scheme is to improve the economic
performance of the UK life science,
bioscience and biotechnology industrial
sectors, by providing a human resource of
highly trained and motivated scientists, who
have the aspiration and potential to reach
senior management positions in large
companies or run their own enterprises.
A Sainsbury Management
Fellowship is a prestigious award; it is
expected that award holders will go on in
due course to make a major contribution to
the wealth of the nation. The selection of
award holders is directed to this end.
What does the award cover?
The award covers the
cost of activities related to an
individual's personal development plan,
subject to approval.
Suitable activities
may include:
-
Full and part-time
short courses and distance learning packages
relating either to technology or management,
such as an MBA.
-
Visits to conferences
or industrial sites in the UK or abroad.
-
Foreign language
training.
-
Short-term secondments
to subsidiaries or to other organisations in
the UK or abroad for defined purposes.
Advice on the
suitability of an activity not mentioned
above is available from The Royal Academy of
Engineering.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the
scheme a candidate will:
-
be a United Kingdom
citizen;
-
normally have a PhD in
a bio-related subject;
-
be following a career
compatible with the scheme's objectives in
the UK, although British citizens based
overseas will also be considered;
-
have the potential and
ambition to reach senior management
responsibility early in their career.
Application procedure
Application
instructions and the
application form are
currently unavailable. The
initial shortlisting stage will take two to
three weeks and may include a preliminary
interview. Once candidates have been
shortlisted, they will be invited to
complete a personality questionnaire and
thereafter an interview with the selection
panel. A decision is then made on an
individual's candidature.
Applications may be
made by an individual acting independently
or in conjunction with an employer. Where
the employer supports an application, it is
helpful if they provide a letter confirming
this, with their view on the applicant's
plan.
Applications may be
made at any time during the year.
