Visiting Professors' Scheme
This programme fosters
industry–academia links and aims to help
universities to teach engineering design to
undergraduates in a way that relates to real
professional practice.
There are three strands
to the programme:
Visiting Professors' Scheme Events
From time to time, the Academy
holds workshop events for participants in its VP
schemes. The purpose of these is to review progress
and to debate issues that might impinge on the
future of any of the schemes. Transcripts, write ups
and presentation material are available for the
following events
The Sustainable Development VP
scheme has also held separate
annual events since
2000. These can be accessed here.
Visiting Professors' Publications
The Academy has published 4
booklets to support these schemes. The most recent
published in June 2007. This lays down 6 simple
principles covering the design of any integrated
system. It is intended as a guide for educators,
students and practising engineers, and sets out to
demystify the design of complex projects.
In September 2005 we issued twelve principles
for Sustainable Development
to guide practising engineers, illustrated by seven
wide ranging case studies.
In February 2005 a separate report summarised lessons learned from 12 years experience
of the VP scheme and contains case studies from ten
universities.
An earlier publication is an
exposition on "Principles of Engineering Design"
illustrated by four case studies.
Poster Competition
In 2005 The Academy instituted
a student design competition, click the links below
