PolicyNet
PolicyNet: A network of
individuals working in science, engineering,
and technology (SET) policy
The Engineering Policy
department at The Royal Academy of
Engineering believes there is a virtue in
increasing the contact between staff who are
working in SET policy in different
organisations. PolicyNet aims to provide an
opportunity for those carrying out much of
the day-to-day policy work to exchange
ideas, discuss problems, and share
information and best practice.
PolicyNet is a network
of individuals from over 30 organisations,
mostly working in science, engineering, and
technology policy. The network is open to
all SET policy staff or individuals with a
specific interest in SET policy and we
particularly welcome policy officers and
those working below the level of ‘Manager’,
who rarely have the opportunity to interact
directly with one another.
The inaugural meeting
was on May 22nd 2003, where Dr Ian Gibson
MP, Chairman of the House of Commons Science
and Technology Select Committee talked about
the role of policy advice in the committee’s
work. The network will meet at bimonthly
intervals and maintain communication between
meetings through an email group and this
website. Additionally, this website will
host information that is useful for those
working in SET policy.
PolicyNet is
coordinated by the Engineering Policy
Department at The Royal Academy of
Engineering and meetings will be held at The
Academy’s offices in Westminster. Meetings
start with a sandwich lunch, followed by a
presentation by a guest speaker on a topic
of relevance to SET policy officers, and
finish with a discussion session. As the
network expands, evening events and social
events will be incorporated into the
program.
