Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development
Research Chair in Emerging Technologies
Applications for this scheme are now being accepted. Please see below for more details about the scheme and instructions on how to apply.
The Academy has a long established programme of Research Chairs and
Senior Research Fellowships that are jointly funded
with industry partners. These work well, not least
because the industry partner – often a large
organisation – is investing in generic research in
an area which is established and recognised to be in
the interests of the industry. The
academic/industrial links established through this
programme have been widely acclaimed.
The Academy considered that in addition to the Research Chair scheme there was a requirement for engineering research into emerging technologies where, by definition, the technology is immature and hence unlikely to be at stage where it can be further developed by industry.
In 2008, The Research Chair in Emerging Technologies was created to fulfil this need, enabling a research professor to undertake work at an ultra-precompetitive level and develop an area of technology to a stage where it will attract interest from the wider research community and subsequently be taken forward by industry.
Initially, only one Research Chair in Emerging Technologies was appointed but we are pleased to announce that we will be making a second appointment this year and the call for applications is now open.
