Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships Scheme: Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the
aims of The Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme
Trust Senior Research Fellowships Scheme
These Fellowships
allow mid-career academics to be relieved of
their administrative and teaching
responsibilities, for between one academic
term and a year, in order to concentrate
their efforts on full time engineering
research.
2. When is the
closing date for applying for a Royal
Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Trust
Senior Research Fellowship?
5pm on Friday 14th Novemebr 2008.
3. How many
Fellowship awards are available each year?
Up to 7 Fellowships
are available annually.
4. In which areas
must the proposed research lie?
The Fellowships can be
held in any engineering discipline.

6. Are there any
age/experience limits for the Fellowship?
There are no age
limits for the Fellowships, but ideally applicants
will be mid-career and with a substantial career
ahead of them.
7. Are there
nationality or other eligibility
requirements?
There are no
nationality restrictions, but applicants
must hold a permanent position in a UK
university.
8. What does the
award provide for?
The award covers the gross
salary costs of a replacement academic (preferably
in the early stages of their career) to undertake
the teaching and administrative responsibilities of
the researcher for the duration of the fellowship.
The basic salary of the replacement academic will be
payable at the starting salary of the lecturer pay
scale at the host institution.
Overall salary costs will
include employer’s National Insurance and
superannuation contributions. The costs submitted in
the application should be those that will apply when
the Fellowship commences. Note: these
Fellowships are not calculated on the basis of Full
Economic Costs (fEC).
A sum of a maximum of £2,500
(‘Support Fund’) may also be made available to the
researcher to cover, for example, miscellaneous
costs such as attendance at conferences and minor
research expenses. The ‘Support Fund’ must not be
used to meet any university overheads or indirect or
unspecified costs.
A full account of the use of
the fund will be required at the end the Fellowship.
9. What is the duration of
the Fellowship?
The Fellowships are
awarded for a period of between one academic
term and twelve months.
10. What is the
assessment process and schedule?
The assessment process
and timescale will be as follows:

11. What happens
after an offer has been made?
After an offer has been made
to a successful candidate, the employing institution
will be required to submit to The Academy a letter
confirming the duties from which the award-holder is
to be relieved, the arrangements for recruiting the
replacement, and the anticipated start date.
Subsequently, The Academy must
be notified of the proposed replacement academic
after the award has been made and a CV should be
submitted to The Academy for formal approval by The
Leverhulme Trust.
12. When can the
Research Fellowship commence?
All Fellowships awarded in
March 2009 must commence no later than 31st March
2010. Usually these Fellowships will commence at the
beginning of October of the year in which they are
awarded.
13. Can the
Fellowship be extended?
Extensions to the
Fellowship are not permitted. Funding is for
the total period agreed at the outset of the
award.
14. How will The
Academy monitor my progress?
The incumbent will be
expected to submit an interim progress report
to The Academy midway through the course of the
Fellowship. The incumbent will submit a final report
not later than 3 months following completion of the
Fellowship. In addition, all Senior Research
Fellows will be invited to attend The
Academy’s Annual Research Forum.
