Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development

Research Fellowships

Cover of the Research Fellowships brochureResearch Fellowships are designed to promote excellence in engineering. They provide support for high-quality engineers to encourage them to develop their interests in academic research as a stepping stone to a successful research career.

This is the seventh year in which we have successfully run the scheme in partnership with EPSRC.

Research Fellowships are aimed at outstanding researchers from all branches of engineering who are about to finish their PhD or have up to three years Post-Doctoral research experience. The scheme provides funding for five years to encourage the best researchers to remain in the university engineering sector. In addition to the direct financial support, the scheme offers:

  • freedom to concentrate on basic research in any field of engineering

  • time to establish a track record in the field

  • the services of a mentor (a Fellow of The Academy) to offer advice and to facilitate industrial links as the research progresses

  • restricted teaching and administrative duties

The call for applications is now open. The deadline for submissions is 28 October 2008. Please see the Guidance Notes for more details.
