Schemes for Engineers in Research and Development

Research Student Development Fellowships: Instructions For Applicants

Before completing the application form please check the scheme information page to ensure you are eligible to apply.

Only applications which are complete at the closing date will be considered for funding. A complete application consists of: a detailed application form, a personal development plan, a letter from the selected Mentor and a letter from the Head of Department. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all of this material is received by the Academy on time.

The choice of Mentor is solely down to the applicant but we recommend that it is the Academic Supervisor. If for some reason they are unable to take on this role, a senior member of staff from your department at the university can be selected or even the Head of Department. Whoever is chosen they must be given a copy of the Guidelines for Mentors, information on the scheme and a copy of your application. Likewise the Head of Department should receive a copy of your application and information on the scheme to enable them to write their reference.

This scheme has been devised to facilitate the development of research students in both soft skills and other activities for which the funding available is limited or non existent. Applicants should note that activities selected for the plan should complement or add synergy to those available as part of the UK Grad Programme organised by CRAC. Applicants are urged to be as creative as possible when devising their Personal Development Plans. A specimen Personal Development Plan (23KB)Adobe Pdf document image has been prepared to assist applicants compose their own and this should be consulted to ensure you use the correct content and desired layout. In addition a A Personal Development Plan template (29KB)Microsoft Word document image  has been provided for your use.

If for any reason there is doubt or question as to the suitability of a particular activity or strand of expenditure, applicants are advised to contact Ian Bowbrick.
