Schemes for University Lecturers
ExxonMobil Excellence in Teaching Awards
These new and exciting awards
have been established to identify and reward Centres
of Excellence in Engineering Teaching in
the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Those university departments
selected as ExxonMobil Centres of Teaching
Excellence will be rewarded with a package of
benefits worth £50,000.
Whilst the university
department is the major beneficiary of the award,
the application focuses on the merits of a specific
member of staff – the candidate.
Ideal candidates should have
distinguished themselves within their peer group by
showing a strong and continuing commitment to
teaching, professional activities, promoting
engineering as a rewarding and creative career,
establishing industrial-academic links and other
activities which ultimately ensure the output of top
quality graduate engineers.
Award Package
Each selected candidate’s
university department will be recognised as an
‘ExxonMobil Centre of Teaching Excellence’ for 12
months and will receive:

a cheque for £10,000;
-
priority for graduate
recruitment;
-
priority for undergraduate
work placements;
-
access to the most
up-to-date case study teaching material;
-
invitations for site
visits.
In addition each selected
candidate will receive an ExxonMobil Gold Medal.
Eligibility
A suitable candidate will
normally:
-
hold a contract with a UK
or Republic of Ireland
university that includes teaching as part of the
duties;
-
have at least an upper
second class honours first degree or equivalent and
a PhD,
preferably with some industrial experience;
-
have held their current
position for at least one year;
-
teach material that is
assessed or examinable on undergraduate or
postgraduate engineering courses;
-
not be a Fellow of The
Royal Academy of Engineering
Application Procedure
Before completing the
application form applicants should read the
Instructions for Applicants.

Applications must be
completed by the candidate and supported with a
confidential citation written by the Head of
Department.

Letters from two Referees,
other than the Head of Department, supporting
the application are required. Candidates are
responsible for ensuring that these letters are
received by the Academy.

Please ensure that your
Head of Department has read the
Guidelines for
Head of Department and both your Referees have
read the
Guidelines for Referees.

The deadline date for
receipt of the completed application form, the
Head of Department’s citation and both Referees’
letters is 30 September 2008.
Selection Committee
The award of an ExxonMobil
Excellence in Teaching Award is entirely at the
discretion of the Selection Committee and any
decision of the Committee is final on all matters.
