  • Professional engineering governance (2555KB)Adobe PDF document icon image
A briefing paper that addresses the role engineers play in making strategic high-level decisions in a wide range of organisations from private companies, both big and small, and government agencies. Based on responses from a number of Fellows of the Academy the report discusses why engineering advice is important, the risks associated with inadequate engineering advice and how such advice can be sourced and used.

  • Space weather: impacts on engineered systems, infrastructure and society
Extreme space weather events have recently been identified as an important risk to the UK’s national infrastructure and in 2011 they are, for the first time, included as part of the National Risk Assessment (NRA). The Academy has decided to conduct a study to explore the engineering and societal impacts of space weather. This will cover both the extreme events and the less extreme events where the impact remains high. The study team will be led by Professor Paul Cannon FREng.

  • UK offshore wind supply chain
Report of a roundtable meeting chaired by Lord Browne and attended by representatives of the offshore wind industry, government and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Heat: degrees of comfort
A study into the future of provision and use of heat in the UK economy out to 2050. If the UK is to meet legally carbon emissions targets in the future the way we both use and produce heat will have to change radically in the next 40 years - but what technologies will become dominant and what will be the impact on the average UK householder?

  • Generating the Future: UK energy systems fit for 2050
A report which considers possible energy scenarios that could meet the UK’s 2050 emissions reduction target.

  • Electric vehicles study
The Royal Academy of Engineering recently announced a study to examine the implications of electric vehicles (EVs) becoming mainstream by 2050.

  • Infrastructure and adaptation
An investigation of changes needed to ensure that critical infrastructure is resilient against threats posed by climate change.

  • Synthetic biology and Systems biology (1057KB)Adobe PDF document icon image reports into the future of systems and synthetic biology research in the UK.

  • Energy
A summary of the recent work done by the Academy on energy policy which includes: details of a series of seminars covering various aspects of energy in the UK and the resulting report, ‘Developing a sustainable energy strategy’; The Academy’s response to the Government’s recent Energy Review; and presentations given at the seminar ‘Energy 2100’.

  • UK Focus for Biomedical engineering
Information about an established series of activities and reports promoting and developing biomedical engineering.

  • Privacy and surveillance
Reports and outcomes of a study discussing the future of surveillance technologies and their impact on privacy and trust.

  • Risk
An archive of reports and events promoting a better understanding of how engineering risks can be assessed and managed.

  • Engineering for complex IT systems
A follow up to The Royal Academy of Engineering and BCS report Challenges of Complex IT Systems, investigating the contribution of engineering skills to IT projects.

  • UK competitiveness and the IT industry
A study exploring the implications of changing nature of information and communications technology on UK competitiveness.

  • Knowledge transfer
Outcomes of an event on knowledge transfer, ‘Making the Most of Workplace Wisdom’.
